Mars Still Building Cedar
NEW RICHMOND, Wis. - Sept. 18. In one of 36 total events that Cedar Lake
Speedway launched over its final weekend of racing, Jimmy Mars captured a $5,000 win in the "Legendary 100" Late
Model headliner at the track at which the Elk Mound driver cut his racing teeth.
Coming off the pole position to
win a 25-lap race in Thursday's opening night qualifying event, Mars took up his position on the pole for
Saturday's NASCAR-sanctioned 40-lap race. After the track held a tribute to the late Brent Laursen, a former
competitor here, the race got underway with Mars moving straight to the lead over Doar.
The first of two
cautions appeared on lap five when Mike Nutzmann stopped on the track, and again on lap eight when Scott
Greer's brakes expired, sending him hard into the wall in turn three.
After Greer's heavily
damaged car was cradled to the pits, thre remaining 32 laps ran under green, and Mars took adavntage,
working traffic to perfection as he steadily pulled away from a fierce battle for second between Doar and Jake
Redetzke. As Mars claimed a dominant win after lapping up to tenth place,
Doar was able to hold off Redetzke for
second. Chad Mahder and 14th starting Nick Anvelink completed the top five.
