Richards Repels Spence For "Winchester 200" Win

WINCHESTER, Va. - Sept. 25. Josh Richards picked up the $10,000 to win main event as Winchester Speedway held its annual "Winchester 200". Sharing qualifying feature wins with J.T. Spence, Richards took the lead from Spence on lap five and raced to his 11th special event win of the season.

Spence took the top spot on lap one of the 50-lap feature and battled off Richards until the latter was able to get by on lap five. Richards would have to work thru lapped traffic on lap 13 to stay in the top spot, and hold Spence off after a lap 17 caution for debris before leading Spence to the checkered flag. Third went to Rick Eckert, followed by Gary Stuhler and D.J. Myers.

50 Late Models checked into the pit area for the two-day event, with the running of time trials on Friday.The top 24 fastest in time trials then would advance to a 30-lap $2000 to win event on Friday, with Spence picking up that win after holding off a challenge from fast qualifier Ronnie DeHaven.   

On Saturday night the Late Models were split into two separate groups to run a pair of 25-lap qualifying features that paid $1000 to the winners, with Richards and Spence claiming separate wins.

DeHaven led the first race on Saturday before Richards made his first pass for the lead on lap four. DeHaven got back into the lead on the next circuit, and Eckert slipped by Richards for second after after a lap seven caution. Richards and Eckert battled until lap 19, when Richards returned to second. With a lap 20 caution, Richards got back around DeHaven after the restart and claimed the win over Eckert, DeHaven, Gary Stuhler, and Jamie Lathroum.

In the second 25-lapper,D.J. Myers passed Jeremy Miller on the second lap to grab the lead. Spence moved to second, then made the winning pass on Myers on lap 20 to claim his second win of the weekend. Myers, Tommy Armel, Keith Jackson, and Booper Bare followed in the top five as the top 12 finishers in each race advanced to the main event.
