B.J. Parker Passes Away at 78

GRAYSVILLE, Ala. - April 4. One of southern racing's most familiar and beloved figures, B.J. Parker, died Monday evening at the age of 78 in his home in Graysville. Parker's passing follows a four-year battle with cancer.

Parker began his career briefly as a competitor, but he soon found his niche' in promotions. He was the founder of both the Southern All Stars asphalt and dirt series, one of the longest running organizations in short track racing. For years, Parker also collaborated with Indiana Auction company founder Charlie Sentman with the Birmingham Auction and Trade Show in Birmingham each January until Sentman's death.

Sam Holbrooks, founder of Behind the Wheel, a Southern All Stars rookie-of-the-year sponsor for many years and now editor of, said, "It would have been difficult to have pursued a career in racing without B.J.'s wisdom and advice. I was a novice back in 1989 and it was great men like B.J., (SUPR Series founder) Donald Watson, (Parker son-in-law) Lynn Phillips, and others who I leaned on pretty heavily to find my way around. B.J. was a wealth of information and wisdom, dispensed in a light-hearted way that only B.J. could. It was a pleasure to work with him as a sponsor and advertiser, but mostly as a friend."

"B.J. never took himself too seriously. His management style became more that of a delegator as he aged, which can be risky at times, but more importantly, it showed the trust he placed in those he surrounded himself with".

Parker left behind his wife of more than 50 years, Gail. He was preceded in death by his only son Michael, himself a victim of cancer. Daughter Jenny is the wife of Talladega Short Track owner/promoter Lynn Phillips.

Funeral Services will be held at Crestview Funeral Home, 5250 Veterans Memorial Blvd. in Adamsville, Alabama. The family will receive friends on Wednesday, April 6th from 5:30-8:00 p.m., with interrment on Thursday, April 7th at 11:00 a.m.
