West Coast Shootout:
Malcolm Gets First WCS Win at Santa Maria "Simkins Memorial"
David Castaneda, track
SANTA MARIA, Ca. - Sept. 5. Tommy Malcolm, of Corona, California, worked his way into the top five, then took
advantage of late-race traffic congestion to grab the lead and the win in the Labor Day weekend "Sandie Simkins
Memorial" at Santa Maria Speedway.
Jason Papich of Arroyo Grande started on the pole based on his win in the six-lap trophy dash that set the
front of the field. Papich led from the beginning with Mike Kirby of Torrance right behind him.
A restart on lap six allowed Jeff Decker of Morgan Hill to pass Kirby and on lap 15, Decker got by Papich
for the lead.
Decker, Papich and Kirby all had to deal with lapping traffic before a caution on lap 19 gave them a little room
in front of them. On the restart, Decker pulled out front and Malcolm got by Kirby to take over third. On lap 25,
Papich had a problem and was passed by Malcolm and Kirby before pulling into the pits.
On lap 29, traffic again came into play and Malcolm got around Kirby, then Decker to take the lead just before a
yellow flag again closed the field on lap 30 and gave Malcolm a clear track. The final 10 laps were all green and
that was all Malcolm needed to take the victory. Decker finished second and Kirby took third, which keeps him
in the championship points lead with two West Coast Shootout point races to go.
Jerry Stewart finished ninth in his final race as a regular Late Model driver. Stewart announced his retirement
from racing this weekend.
