SAS East: Ferguson Tops Hall of Fame Field at
GAFFNEY, S.C. - Sept. 5. Chris Ferguson
used patience to secure the biggest Late Model
victory of his career in the Southern All Stars
East "Hall of Fame" race on Sunday at Cherokee Speedway.
The young Mount Holly, N.C. driver raced in the
top three behind Casey Roberts and Johnny Pursley for most of the 60-lap Southern All Stars East sanctioned
event, but was forced to take evasive maneuvers when leader
Jim Rasey battles #99 Jeff Cooke at
Cherokee Speedway before Cooke made an early exit in the caution-plagued race and Rasey went on to take sixth at
the wire. (George Missita)
Roberts suddenly suffered a flat tire. Ferguson
and Pursley split Roberts' #101 car and Ferguson came out with the lead.
Ferguson won $10,000 for the 60-lap feature win,
the biggest payday of his career. Dennis Franklin,
of Gaffney, finished second ahead of Will Vaught of Crane, Missouri. Roberts, of Toccoa, Ga., made his tire change and returned to
the end of the lead lap before returning to finish fourth ahead of South
Carolina teenager Zack Mitchell.
