Cresco Thriller

series report

CRESCO, Ill. - Sept. 4. Fans at The Cresco Speedway witnessed a thriller with the Dart Corn Belt Clash main event. Denny Eckrich, of Tiffin, Iowa executed a last lap pass to take the Labor Day weekend win.

One of the standouts of the year, Chad Simpson dominated the dash, then drew a #6, inverting the top six finishers of the dash.

After the $2,000-to-win 30-lap A-main field rolled on the track on this cool Sunday night, Eckrich and Tim Isenberg screamed to the front of the pack, leading the way on the nicely prepared oval. With two laps in, Isenburg was at the point.

Lapped traffic was the next story to unfold, as Isenberg was easily maneuvering through the tail of the field, lapping cars by lap 10. Eckrich was keeping the leader in his sites while point leader Simpson, and second in points, brother Chris Simpson, also kept their sites on Eckrich.

Isenberg was working the field flawlessly when he ran upon mid-pack racing for position. Three-wide action at mid-pack at lap 20 had slowed the leader enough for Eckrich to close to a half car-length, with the Simpson brothers closing the gap.  Jason Rauen had also joined the lead pack after starting 15th.

With five to go, Chad Simpson was flexing his muscle, pressuring Eckrich for second spot with brother Chris and Rauen stuck to his rear bumper. With one lap to go it was Isenberg, Eckrich, Chad Simpson, Chris Simpson,, Rauen, and Jason Utter. In the center of turns three and four, Eckrich made his move, along with Rauen on Chris Simpson's heels. At the checkers it was the #50 of Eckrich by a half-length over Isenberg, with Rauen by a bumper at the line over the #25 of Chad Simpson.
