Casebolt Wins “Les Boggs 50” at Rocky Top

By: T. J. Layne, Rocky Top Raceway PR

COAL GROVE, Oh. - May 7. In the largest race of the 2010 season at Rocky Top Raceway on Friday, Steve Casebolt, Jr. inherited the lead from Wayne Chinn on lap 12 of the 50-lap feature, then held off a strong challenge from Eddie Carrier, Jr. later in the race to win the "Les Boggs 50".

"Rocky Top is a track that we had never raced at before, so we were excited to walk away with a win and a check," Casebolt said later. "Eddie (Carrier) runs extremely well here and has won a lot of races at this track, so we knew he would be tough. I knew if I didn't make any mistakes it would be hard for him to get around me, so I just kind of played it cool and took my time in order not to make any."

Casebolt and Chinn battled side by side for the lead to start the $5,000 to win feature.  Casebolt led the opening lap while Chinn took the lead on lap two.  The two drivers continued battling side by side until a caution flew on lap 12.

During the caution period, the complexion of the race changed as leader Chinn pulled off the track with mechanical problems.  This allowed Casebolt to inherit the lead with Carrier second.  When the race went back to green, Casebolt stretched out a big lead for the next 12 laps.  As the leaders approached lapped traffic, however, Carrier began to reel in Casebolt and was on his bumper when a caution flew on lap 30.

When the race resumed, Casebolt and Carrier had an incredible battle for the lead, with both cars running low in turns one and two and Casebolt up high in three and four, with Carrier running down low.  Casebolt used his high side momentum to fend off Carrier's low side challenge.

As the race reached it’s final six laps, Carrier took a hard charge on the outside into turn one.  Coming off of the turn, Carrier’s machine went a little too high as he tapped the guardrail.  The little bit of contact with the guardrail was enough to hurt Carrier’s momentum as Casebolt increased his lead to come across the checkers unchallenged. Carrier finished second with 18th starter Victor Lee third.
