West Coast Shootout: Pounds Knocks Down "Budweiser Nationals" Final at Bakersfield

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - Oct. 8. The West Coast Late Model Shootout Series settled its accounts Saturday with the second night of the "Budweiser Nationals". Brad Pounds came home with the $3,000 payday, while Clay Daly finished sixth and put the wraps on his series championship by a ten-point margin over third generation driver Nick Bartels.

Jason Papich earned the pole position inside of Rob Sanders for the start, but before the first lap was officially on the books, Papich spun in front of local driver John Lowery, who drove over the nose of Papich's car. Lowery survived the incident to become the new polesitter, while a disappointed Papich had to call it a night.

With the race restarting, Sanders jumped out in front of Lowery and Mike Kirby, while Pounds and Andy Obertello fought it out for fourth place. Obertello initially prevailed in that duel, then got by Kirby for third before the first officlal race caution flew on lap ten for a spun Larry Childress.

With the restart, Kirby continued to slip as Mike Johnson and Bobby Hogge pushed him to fifth place. Ahead of them, Pounds got back around Obertello to grab third. Up front, Lowery passed Sanders for the lead on lap 16, and Pounds soon followed into second.

For the second night in a row, Lowery saw his hopes for a win dashed with an untimely spin - this time from the lead. Pounds inherited the lead with Sanders and Hogge in pursuit, and over the next few laps would build a solid advantage. A spin by Tommy Malcolm with three to go would erase Pounds' lead, but the restart saw Pounds drive away unchallenged to the $3,000 win.

The victory brought Pounds' winnings to $5,500 on the evening as he claimed the earlier Open Wheel Modified main event.
