Birkhofer Wraps Up Magnolia State Swing With "Cotton Pickin'" Win

COLUMBUS, Miss. - Oct. 30. The ink has barely dried on Charles and Jannie Thrash's big check for his "Fall Classic" win in Meridian, Miss., and Brian Birkhofer has done it again.  The Muscatine, Iowa veteran travelled north to Magnolia Motor Speedway, reeled in Mike Marlar on lap 55, and routed the field for another $15,000 in the track's annual "Cotton Pickin' 100" on Saturday.

As he had done only the week before, Mike Marlar again pulled out to an early lead, with Shane Clanton in pursuit and Birkhofer working his way into third as the race ran a semmengly endless stretch under the green flag. A third of the way into the 100-lapper, Birkhofer and Billy Moyer had overtaken Clanton and pushed him back to fourth, while local dark horse Scott Dedwylder had entered the top five after entering the race through a B-Main win. Dedwylder shoved his #33 into fourth place by the halfway point. With the race still remaining caution-free, Birkhofer continued to stalk Marlar until finally getting his opening on lap 55.

With the torrid pace set by the leaders, one car after another had begun to fall a lap down to the leaders, and finally, Scott Bloomquist slowed on the track and pitted to try his luck on new tires.

As the field went back to green, Moyer ducked into second, but Marlar came roaring back to retake it and continue his chase of Birkhofer. During the closing laps, Clanton also found some extra pedal and got back around Moyer to recapture third, where he finished behind Birkhofer and Marlar. Moyer settled for fourth, while David Breazeale and Jimmy Mars advanced to fifth and sixth, pushing the fading Dedwylder back to seventh as he struggled to finish the race with an ailing engine.

In the Crate Late Model portion of the event, Ronnie Johnson, after finishing 16th in the main event, took on the field and tracked early leader Jeremy Shaw before getting by and leading Shaw to the checkered flag. Rounding out the top five were Chip Brindle, Cliff Williams, and Evan Ellis.
