Shirley Runs Down Weaver For $9K at Kankakee

KANKAKEE, Ill. - Oct. 1. Brian Shirley started fourth on the grid and bided his timje before running down polesitter and early leader Kevin Weaver to win $9,000 in Friday's "Triple Crown Clash" at Kankakee County Speedway, featuring the Sunoco American Late Model Series (ALMS), the Monster Midwest Tour, and the Northern All Stars Late Model Series.

The race was a makeup event from the originally scheduled one that was rained out of August 13th.

Weaver, starting inside of Dillan White, was fast off the line and appeared to be strong enough to go the distance, but several cautions kept the Gibson City, Illinois veteran's familiar #B12 in sight of his pursuers. After battling season-long foe Jason Feger in the early going, Shirley finally reeled in second

place and got under Weaver well into the 60-lap race. Ryan Unzicker, after starting sixth in line, soon followed suit and claimed the second spot as Weaver slipped back to third. Feger picked up fourth ahead of Dennis Erb, Jr.

Eric Smith raced from 16th to finish sixth, while White faded back to seventh. Rodney Melvin picked up nine positions to finish eighth after making the cut through a B-Main win, followed by Frank Heckenast, Sr. Brandon Sheppard took tenth place after accepting a NALMS provisional and advancing from 21st.

Seventeen of the original 25 starters completed the laps. Despite being the first off the track, Rusty Schlenk's appearance was enough to give him the UMP DirtCar championship with a still insurmountable points lead over Feger.
