NLMS: Whitener Wins an Eventful "Bubbatoberfest"

Jimmy Rouse

OCALA, Fla. - Oct. 15. The National Late Model Series (NLMS) Southern Tour returned to Bubba Raceway Park Saturday, and Mark Whitener lost and regained the lead twice before claiming the $3,000 win.

Ivedent Lloyd, Jr. passed Whitener for the lead on lap five, only for it to be taken away after a lap 12 caution that flew for Dillon Wood and his broken rear-end.

Lap 16 saw Casey Barrow spin and hit the tire barrier, ending his night. During the next few laps, it was shredded tires that took Tyler Ivey and Jeff Mathews to the back. Three laps later, Lloyd overtook Whitener for the lead again.

A restart from caution saw David Clegg upo on his side and Travis Carter on two wheels, both nearly flipping but able to continue as after climbing the wall. After another pair of cautions, lead changed hands for good on lap 37 when Lloyd blew his engine.

On lap 39, Hunter Peacock stopped on the track, setting up a green-white-checkered finish, extending the race to 41 laps, according to NLMS rules. Whitener took his fourth win of 2011 with Austin Kirkpatrick second ahead of Bo Allen and Rich Pratt. Tyler Ivey drove back up to the top five after his early misfortune. Brandon DeWitt survived to take sixth over Christian Augspurger and Jack Nosbisch, while self-professed  "Worst Late Model Driver" Bubba Clem proved himself wrong with a run to ninth. Despite a DNF, Lloyd was credited with 10th.
