Van Wormer Salvages Mt. Pleasant ALMS Win After Blown Time Trial, Near Miss in Feature

MOUNT PLEASANT, Mich. - May 28. Jeep Van Wormer overcame an early race gaffe and raced to Friday's American Late Model Series (ALMS) win the hard way, with a little help from the "luck of the draw".

Returning to the track from which he launched his career, Van Wormer slipped off the track during qualifying, sending him to the nosebleed section of his heat race. From there, the Pinconning, Mich. native rumbled through the field to a second place finish in his heat - good enough to earn a chance to draw for a starting spot near the front.

As luck would have it, Van Wormer drew for the outside pole ahead of a 22-car starting field. The rest was history as Van Wormer tracked polesitter and early leader Curtis Roberts for nine laps before swinging his familiar #55 to the high side and made the winning pass.  Roberts and Rich Neiser joined Van Wormer in pulling away from the pack until Neiser got by Roberts to claim second.

As traffic thickened ahead of the leaders, 11th starting Don Marcoullier displaced Roberts back to fourth, while Rusty Schlenk claimed fifth.

While leading the through traffic, Van Wormer came together with the lapped car of Dusty Moore, who spun off the track as Van Wormer got completely sideways.  Van Wormer managed to save the car for the final restart, and raced away to the win at the final green, trailed by Neiser, Marcoullier, Roberts, and Schlenk.

Taking heat wins were Schlenk, Curt Spalding, Neiser and Roberts. The semi-feature winners were Matt Miller and Dusty Moore.
