ALMS: Schlenk Holds Off Jeep For Mt. Pleasant Win

Jeremy Dickman, track p.r.

MT. PLEASANT, Mich. — Rusty Schlenk grabbed an early lead and never looked back en route to the win in Friday's third annual "Woof Classic" for the ALMS tour's first visit of the season. The race is run in memory of Mt. Pleasant Speedway Promotional Director Bill Long’s father.

After the heat races were completed, the 22-car ALMS feature field was headed up by three-time Mt. Pleasant Speedway champion Justin Robinson of Shepherd, Mich., and 1999 champion Jeff Kohn of Sheridan, but Schlenk went to the front and pulled out to a sizeable lead. Jeep Van Wormer of Pinconning, Mich. moved up to second.

Running in sixth place midway through the race, David Hilliker's car broke and came to a stop up against the turn four wall, and later in the race, Dona Marcoullier's #6m got a bit off the track in turn four while in third place and rolled his car. Marcoullier walked away from the rollover.

Several laps later the checkered flag would fly and Schlenk would cap off his record-setting night with the Sunoco American Late Model Series “Woof Classic” victory, holding off Van Wormer, Jeff Kohn, Brian Ruhlman, and Zack Olger. Jon Henry of Ada, Ohio, made his way from a 21st starting spot to finish sixth ahead of 22nd starting Justin Robinson.

With 27 ALMS teams making the trip to the three-eighths mile dirt track, Schlenk blew around the track in a scorching time of 14.04 seconds to set a new Mt. Pleasant Speedway track record, bettering the old mark of 14.06 set in 2009 by Zack Olger.
