Ultimate Racing Series: Davenport Gets First ULMS Win at Cherokee "March Madness"

Jason Curd

GAFFNEY, S.C. - Mar. 13. Jonathan Davenport took advantage of scheduled fourth starter Ross Bailes' early departure, leapt off the front row, and held on to claim the win in Sunday's one week delayed "March Madness" at Cherokee

Speedway. The north Georgia ace picked up $10,000 for his first "Super" Late Model win of the season. Davenport has one crate Late Model special event win to his credit in 2011.

Davenport quickly grabbed the lead over series rookie Chip Brindle and set a blistering pace until a caution at halfway bunched the field back up. Casey Roberts took advantage of a lap 31 restart to briefly grab the lead over Davenport. Just three laps later, Roberts took advantage of the usually dominant inside row, forcing Davenport to take the outside lane for the restart. This would prove costly as Davenport found the outside groove to be the fast way around the speedway. Scott Bloomquist piloted his self-designed car from his seventh place starting position to finish second behind Davenport by utilizing the traction on the high side.

16th finishing Jared Landers was reminded why it's best to stay off the infield tire barriers.(Mark Bochiardy)

Ross Bailes at Cherokee Speedway

The early story of the night was the Shell Racing Solutions Fast Time Award winner Chip Brindle. Brindle set fast time in only his third time behind the wheel of a Super Late Model. He would go on to finish fourth and is only two points from the series points lead after the first two events.

Several drovers who expected to do well in the event suffered mechanical issues (Madden, Smith, Ivey, Bailes). The race was delayed when the speedway made the call to rework and water the track before the main event.

Fifth place finisher Chris Ferguson agreed that the track made the right call to water the speedway before the main event, "It really brought in a second groove for us to race on."
