“The Winfield Warrior” Wins 12th annual "Bluegrass
BARDSTOWN, Ky. - Aug. 7. Bluegrass Speedway presented its 12th annual "Bluegrass 50" on Saturday, and Mike Marlar
of Winfield, Tennessee drove to the checkered flag first in the 50 lap, $5,000 to win event for the 44 Auto Mart
Late Model division.
With Marlar on the pole, outside polesitter Mike Jewell jumped to the early race lead over Marlar, Justin
Rattliff, and Jeff Watson, but Eric Wells drove past Watson for fourth on lap two. The front
five then remained the same until the only caution of the event waved on lap eight as Cody Mahoney slowed
with a flat tire.
With the double-file restart Marlar nipped at Jewell's heels, while Watson battled with Aaron Hatton for
fifth until Hatton got by Watson with a turn four slidejob pass on lap nine. As the top three began to race into
lapped traffic, Hatton got past Wells for fourth on lap 19.
Jewell was able to negotiate traffic better than Marlar and gain a bit of breathing room by lap 28,
but Marlar would soon run Jewell back down and bring Rattliff along as well. Marlar finally made his move off on
lap 34 and drove past Jewell for the lead in turn three. Rattliff closed in on Jewell and the pair battled
side-by-side for second on lap 38 before making contact as they raced hard into turn three. Rattliff was able
recover and to gain the position.
Meanwhile, Marlar pulled away from the field over the final 10 laps and took the win in the David Wells owned
Wells Motorsports/Valley View Enterprises sponsored #36 Rocket Chassis. Rattliff, Jewell, Hatton, and Wells
completed the top five.
