MARS: Looney Sweeps at Salina

Brian Garrison

SALINA, Okla. – June 4. Brad Looney entered the season with a single victory with the MARS DIRTcar Series, and now he’s at four and counting.

The 36-year-old driver from Republic, Mo. continued a torrid streak on Saturday at the Salina Highbanks Speedway, racing to his third consecutive victory on the tour. The series points leader earned $3,000 in adding the victory to a triumph six days earlier in Monett, Mo. and the previous night at Brill’s Motor Speedway in Meeker, Okla.

Ronny Hollingsworth - Dustin Mooneyham at Salina Speedway MARS

Looney becomes just the fourth driver in the history of the 11-year-old series to record three straight victories (others include Terry Phillips, Wendell Wallace, and Bill Frye. Phillips owns the series record by winning four straight on four different occasions).

At Salina, Looney qualified on the pole by gaining the most passing points from the heat races. To his outside would be six-time and defending MARS champion Terry Phillips. Phillips led the first half of the 30-lap feature and the first caution would wave on lap 16 for Jimmy Miller of Conway, Ark. and Jeremy Payne of Springfield, Mo. Payne would be unable to continue.

On the double file restart, Phillips led the field to green, but Looney benefitted from a great restart and challenged Phillips for the lead. The pair would exchange the lead several times over the next three laps before Looney took control for good on lap 19.

The race's second caution waved on lap 21 as Phillips made contact with Ronny Hollingsworth of Northport, Ala. Looney was able to stay out front over the next nine laps and take the win over Hollingsworth, Tommy Weder, Jr. of Woodward, Okla., Eric Turner of Springfield, Mo., and Jason Hughes of Watts, Okla.
