Clash South: Weeks prevails at Traveler's Rest

Alex Cummings

WINGATE, N.C. - June 19. Rick Weeks grabbed his first Clash South win and propelled himself to the top of the series points standings Saturday night at Traveller's Rest Speedway

Weeks choose the outside lane on the start of the feature, which almost turned out to be detrimental to his night. With the green flag, Chris Ferguson got the jump on the inside lane and overpowered Weeks heading into turn one. As the field came around under the starters stand, Jim Rasey slammed the outside wall in turn four and actually rode the top of the wall. Rasey had minor damage after the incident and was able to continue.

On the restart, cars stacked up like cord wood in turn two when the #F1 of Keith Freeman and the #84 of Jay Sessoms collided and came to rest on the outside of the corner.

Then on lap two, Ferguson tried widening out the racetrack by hitting the outside turn four wall, allowing Weeks to take the lead with a pass on the inside. Tim Allen then made a strong move to the inside of Benji Cole heading into turn one and was setting sail for Weeks when his driveshaft came apart as he approached turn three. Allen had been on the move in his GRT Impala, but an early season of bad luck had bitten him again.

On lap 11, Ritchie Corley spun, and under caution, Ferguson went pit side while running third for a flat tire. He would later pull into the pits and go behind the wall on lap 29.

On the restart, Weeks was able to power away from the field yet again and hold off the rest of the field after two more cautions, with Cole coming home in second.

NOTES: The Clash South race at Travelers Rest was a first for many new drivers. Tim Allen brought out a new car for the 2010 season. Keith Freeman made his first trip to a Clash South race this season at Traveler's Rest, along with Benji Cole, making his first appearance of the season. Lee Cooper raced in his first ever Clash South race as a former crate driver who has had many laps on TRS. Jim Rasey made his first ever appearance at the track, as did eighth finishing Randy Harmon. After two races in the newly formed Clash South, Ricky Weeks sets atop the standings followed by Jim Rasey, Chris Ferguson, Tim Allen, and Jeff Smith.
