UFO: McGill Races to First Ever UFo Win at Elkins

series report

KERENS, W.V. - June 17. Butch McGill of West Union, W.V. has a long list of accomplishments over his 40-plus year driving career. McGill added a UFo Race Championship win to his resume on Friday by winning the "Chuck Gear Trophy" at the new Elkins Raceway. McGill held off the strong charges of Robbie Scott to claim the $3,000 prize.

McGill led Chuck Harper at the green flag, but Robbie Scott quickly took second from Harper on the second lap. On lap four, the night's only caution flag appeared when Shuan Poling hit the front stretch wall and came to a stop. Harper, Keith Barbara and Devin Friese held the top five positions at that point.

Scott remained in close pursuit of McGill over the remaining 36 laps. On lap 30, the leaders moved into heavy lapped traffic, generating the most intense race for the lead of the 41 lap feature and allowing Harper to close in on McGill and Scott. On lap 32, McGill and Scott raced for the lead side-by-side down the back straight as they spilt a lapped car. McGill once again came out on top and lead the remaining laps to the checker flag in his Jenkins Ford, KFC, NAPA Auto Parts, Slicks Car Wash machine.

Scott, of Shinnston, W.V. followed closely in second at the finish, with Harper, of Beverly, W.V. in third.

2010 UFo Champion Chad McCellan and team mate Quintin Wyandt were late arrivals after suffering a breakdown with their hauler in route to the event. By UFo rules, late arrivals may tag the tail of the next available race. Both were able to start the feature event and they raced to 15th and 16th place finishes.

Devin Friese continues to lead the UFo point standings by 15 points over Keith Barbara.
