Ultimate Racing Series: Bailes dominates 31st annual Shrine Race

Nicholas Herman & Jason Curd, track report

LAURENS, S.C. - June 14. Ross Bailes admitted after Tuesday's Laurens County Shrine Race at Laurens County Speedway that he had gotten down on himself earlier in the year because of problems with his car. Those problems certainly didn’t present themselves as Bailes put on a dominating display that netted a $3,000 victory - his biggest win to date, and second ever in a Super Late Model race car.

Bailes started on the outside for row one, choosing that spot despite having the fastest time in the field during qualifying (14.430 seconds). Bailes turned the outside position to an advantage when he got by the #17 car of Mike Gault at the start of the race. Bailes expanded his lead over the field and at one point had built an astonishing 7.256-second lead on Colby Cannon.

Local favorite Chris Madden and Ultimate points leader Chris Ferguson started deep in the field with poor qualifying efforts and the pair raced hard to the front. Others weren’t quite as successful. LCS regular Larry Timms had the roughest night of any of the drivers, putting his car into the wall on the first attempt at a start to the race. He did not return and finished the race in 17th. Billy Rushton took 11th place after consecutive second-place finishes in the regular Saturday night SLM races at the speedway.

As the race neared its conclusion, it appeared Bailes would maintain his large lead, but a caution with four laps brought the field back together. Cannon was briefly within striking distance of Bailes, but a solid restart coming off turn four allowed Bailes to pull away for the win.
