ULMS: Hess Repeats at Eriez "Mobilia Memorial"

Glenn Slocum

ERIE, Pa. - June 12. Dave Hess, Jr. prevailed for the second week in a row as Arrowhead Winery, Jay’s Auto Wrecking, Knight Racing and the Family of Joe Mobilia sponsored a night of racing in the memory of Joe Mobilia, a pioneer of Late Model racing here who passed away earlier this year.

With 30 Jay’s Auto Wrecking Late Models turning out for the ULMS- sanctioned event, Hess and Boom Briggs led the pack to Spanky Hall’s green flag. Hess led at the green with Chad Valone and Briggs running side by side over the first two laps before Valone settled into the spot. The race ran green till lap 12 when Dutch Davies slowed on the back stretch.

At the restart. Hess was followed by Valone, Rob Blair, Briggs and a very strong Ryan Scott. At halfway, Ron Davies was third, next to Valone, while Scott’s run ended with mechanical problems. Davies was second at lap 18 but Hess was half a straight-a-way ahead.

With ten to go, a caution was shown for Greg Oakes slowing in turn one, and again with two laps remaining when Jared Miley spun in turn two and was collected by Dick Barton. Only one more green flag lap was in the book when Dave Lyon spun in turn four, setting up a one-lap dash for the glory. At the checkers it was Hess, Davies, Rob Blair, Andy Boozel, and Chad Valone.
