UFO Race Championship: Johnson, Davis Share PPMS Twins

Track report

IMPERIAL, Pa. - June 11. Greensburg Pa.’s Davey Johnson made his first start of 2011 at PPPMS a winning one, taking the first of the Twin 28’s of the Hoosier Tire Mid Atlantic DIRTcar Super Late Models. The second 28 lap event went to Rayland, Oh.’s Mike Davis as he picked up his first win since 2007 and fifth career PPMS win.

Chad McClellan led before sixth starting Johnson took over on lap two and while he led the rest of the way. Johnson withstood a strong challenge early from Keith Barbara, who made it tough for him on the restarts. Barbara ran second until Jared Miley took over the spot on lap 15. Jared Miley reeled in Johnson as the race wore on and challenged him in the last few laps, almost getting by in turns one and two on lap 26, but Johnson held him off and picked up the win over Miley, Devon Friese, Brandon Burgoon, and Daryl Charlier.

For Johnson it was his 46th career PPMS Late Model win while he was subbing in the #2j for his brother Mike, who had other commitments.

In the second 28-lap event, an invert of 12 put Davis in second on the start and grabbed the lead at the outset. John Mollick moved into second and chased Davis, while Johnson came from 12th to fourth by lap seven. By lap 16, he was second, but a pair of lapped cars tangled in front of Johnson and third running Mollick, collecting both. Mollick was towed off, while Johnson pitted and did not return.

This put Chad McClellan and Jared Miley behind on the restart. Miley moved into second on lap 18 and got close to Davis, but Davis was able to pull away in the closing laps. At the end it was Davis, Miley, Burgoon, McClellan (in his best ever PPMS run), and Devin Friese.

Jim Stephans was scheduled to start on the pole of the second event, but pitted before the race went to green with overheating problems. Daryl Charlier, Herman Bertolini, Tom Bateman and Tony Musolino did not start the second event due to overheating/mechanical problems.
