Series report

TAZEWELL, Tenn. - July 23. Vic Hill came out on top of a wild Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series finale tonight at the very fast Tazewell Speedway. Hill inherited the top spot when leader Chris Madden lost a right rear wheel on lap 43.

Once out front, the driver of the #1 Warrior race car then led the remaining 11 circuits to record the $5,300 triumph over Billy Ogle, Jr., Eric Jacobsen, Tommy Kerr, and Mark Vineyard. Despite suffering the mechanical trouble, Madden clinched his third Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series point title by virtue of his sixth place effort.

With rain moving into the area, consolation races were scrapped and the field was set solely on qualifying times, with Hill on the pole after changing a tire in the infield. Hill led the first four circuits before Tony Knowles took command as Hill was held up behind a slower car. Knowles led up until lap ten, when he tangled on the backstretch with Chad Ogle, who he was trying to put a lap down. Madden took over the top spot.

On lap 16, Hill was right there and working the low side but three laps later, Johnny Pursley found a rut in turn one and then contacted the outside wall, bringing out the second caution. The top three were Madden, Hill and Billy Ogle Jr., who rode in third as Hill and Madden were battled for the top two spots.

Behind Ogle, the fight was on for the remainder of the top five spots betwween Stacy Boles, Eric Jacobsen, and Tommy Kerr.

The pace was slowed again on lap 36 for another incident which gave Hill another shot at the point. Madden got the jump again, but three laps later he once again heard Hill on his rear quarter. Every time the two would hook up, a caution flag would fly, and on lap 43, it flew once again - this time for the leader Madden who had a tire issue. The #44 team made repairs and the 2011

Southern Nationals Champion was able to return to salvage a sixth place performance. Hill was the benefactor of Madden's misfortune, as he led the remaining 11 circuits of the race to score his second career series victory.

Stacy Boles had a solid top five run going until a flat right rear tire sent him into the pit area on lap 46. The top five in series points were virtually locked into place before the finale and an awards ceremony was held in victory lane before the race program started. Madden won his third Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series point title over Knowles, Johnny Pursley, Jr., Donald Bradsher, and Brian Reese.

NALMS Suspends Remaining Season

In a statement released to the racing media Monday, Northern All All Stars Late Model Series (NALMS) owners Shawn Hall and Bob Mooney relased the following statement:

To all NALMS drivers and fans,

Northern Allstars Late Model Series regrets to inform all of our drivers and fans that as of today (May 14, 2012) we will suspend all series races for the remaining 2012 season. The primary reason for the decision to discontinue the series was mainly economics. Tracks, teams and fans are having a hard time these days with the cost of living in general. With the cost of fuel, parts, tires, tickets and lodging, many people just cannot afford to travel to our shows, so we feel it's best to stop for now and try to regroup for the 2013 season.

Our series needs to be able to have at least 18 to 20 shows to cover our cost of putting on these shows and our drivers point funds. With many tracks cutting back on their special events and other tracks just choosing not to have specials at all, it's has really cut our options for race tracks down to a very few unless you are willing to travel several hours away from the Central Illinois area, and that is not cost effective for the racing teams or fans.

In closing we would like to thank all of the drivers and fans whom have supported the series over the years and we hope to be able to come back with a bigger and better season for everyone in 2013.
