PHENIX CITY, Ala. - July 20. Barry Wright Race Cars house car driver Jonathan Davenport extended his current
Southern Nationals Series point lead with a convincing $3,500 win tonight at the East Alabama Motor Speedway.
After setting fast time during qualifying nearly four-tenths faster than anyone else, Davenport held the
stout field behind him for all 35 circuits in the A-Main to claim his second career Southern Nationals Series
Finishing behind his #49 was Chris Madden, who closed to within a couple of lengths of Davenport, but couldn't
challenge on a track that had locked down with 15 laps to go. On a fairly racey track earlier in the main
event, position changes were common and Madden had advanced quickly from ninth to fourth behind Davenport,
Tommy Kerr and Stacey Holmes. At that point, the caution flew on the fourth circuit for Bub McCool's slide over
With the restart, Madden passed Holmes for third, but another caution erased the move. After getting back
under way, the last of the five caution flags went red on lap 21 when a "slide job" went awry. Kerr
wheel-hopped Holmes and went airborne, and after riding each other down the backstretch, the two got
locked together again before spinning to a stop in turn three.
With Madden sitting comfortable in second at that point, Clint Smith raced from his 11th place start to third.
Tenth starting Texas driver Chris Brown was fourth and Brian Booze completed the top five at the finish.
