Southern Nationals: Roberts Two Straight at Screven
Series report (w/thanks to Brian
SYLVANIA, Ga. - July 17. Slowed by 11 caution periods while leading flag to flag from the pole position,
Toccoa, Georgia native Casey Roberts recorded his second straight Southern Nationals Series victory tonight at the
Screven Motor Speedway.
Roberts earned fast time honors on the evening and later led all 53 circuits of the main event from his pole
position to pocket the $5,300 top prize. Kenny Compton challenged on restarts and remained close for much of
the distance, but got knocked out after a late tangle with a lapped car. That moved Brent Dixon to second, but
Johnny Pursley passed him and took up the chase of Roberts before Dixon fell out with mechanical troubles.
Following Roberts' #101 machine across the finish line was John Pursley, Jr. and eighth starting
Chesley Dixon. Clint Smith suffered an early left front flat tire and rebounded from the rear to finish
fourth. Jeff Smith started 19th and steadily advanced into contention to exchange positions with Smith
before settling for fifth. New series point leader Jonathan Davenport wound up sixth in the rundown.
The event ended around 1:00 a.m. after torrential rains delayed the
