Southern All Stars: Hollingsworth Stomps "Jean Johnson Memorial" at Cleveland

Steve Hixson

CLEVELAND, Tenn. - July 17.  Northport, Alabama's Ronny Lee Hollingsworth came to the Cleveland Speedway Saturday seeking some Southern All-Star retribution after falling less than ten laps shy of his first series win of the season the previous evening at nearby Boyd's Speedway.

The 2009 series runner-up stomped the competition into submission Saturday by sweeping qualifying and all 50 laps of the Budweiser "Jean Johnson Memorial" in his #18 Waddle Trucking/Kelley Electrical Contractors" race car, holding back early challenges from David Payne and later, World of Outlaws series regular Shane Clanton.

Derek Ellis got the outside line momentum and seem to carry the lead into turn three after the start, but Hollingsworth had other ideas. Off of turn four, the young Alabama driver charged under Ellis to lead the first lap with David Payne and Clanton following.

The yellow flag replaced the green as consi winners Hill and Gibson tangled. Payne took on Ellis on the restart to take second, then began tracking leader Hollingsworth, but a few laps later, Ellis pulled up lame off the front straight-away and was done for the night in a dismal 20th place.

Just ahead in the closing laps, all eyes were trained on David Payne, who was smoking profusely through the turns, but still seemed to be catching the leader. But, it was Shane Clanton getting the better of the final restart on lap 39 to get ahead of Payne for second for the final circuits.

Jake Knowles fought hard from outside the top five with Randy Weaver and Freddy Smith before falling to sixth place, but it was Texan Chris Brown making most of the double file restarts to finally advance to an impressive fifth place after battling sheel to wheel with Freddy Smith.
