ULMS: Hess Races to Uncontested Stateline Victory
BUSTI, N.Y. - July 16. Hot racing and hot weather for the Jays Auto Wrecking
ULMS $4,000 to win Super Late Model event greeted fans at Stateline Speedway. While surviving several caution
slowdowns, Dave Hess, Jr. never relinquished the lead in the $4,000 to win event. Hess raced to his second ULMS
win at Stateline for the season, and his third in four attempts.
Hess led a field of 22 to the start of the 30-lap feature event with
$4,000. Greg Oakes was alongside, with Mike Knight in row two along with Dutch Davies, and Chad Valone and Chris
Hackett making up row three.
Hess was five car lengths ahead of Knight at the end of the first circuit before
Randy Lobb went up in smoke and Dennis Lunger spun for the first caution. Oakes restarted third behind Hess
and Knight, but his car started smoking and the caution flew before lap two was completed to
allow Oakes to be pushed into the pits.
Hess led lap four as Ricotta hit the back stretch wall. Rod Maloy lost the handle
in turn three and when the dust settled, Nathan Short and Lunger were stopped on the speedway for caution
Hess changed his line on the restart, sticking to the inside while Knight
trailed by five lengths with a third of the event complete. Valone was a distant third, followed by Davies and
Eck contesting the fourth spot, as Scott Johnson nosed into the turn four fence for
caution six, three laps from the half way mark.
After the halfway point, Davies and Valone began to lose ground to the leaders as
Knight stayed in close contact with Hess, and Eck was running alone in third. Knight moved up the speedway to
try to move up to the leader, but failed to make up any ground as Hess finished unchallenged.
