Southern Nationals: Madden is Early Points Leader With Carolina Win

Series report

GASTONIA, N.C. - July 12. Gray Court, South Carolina native Chris Madden recorded his 15th career Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series victory tonight at the Carolina Speedway. Madden inherited the lead from Jonathan Davenport on lap 25 when Davenport's #49 fell victim to a broken transmission.

The driver known as "Smokey" led the remaining circuits en route to capturing the $3,500 top prize over Dennis Franklin, Ross Bailes, Chip Brindle, and Donald Bradsher.

Polesitter Johnny Pursley broke in turn four of the first lap and wound up head first into the outside retaining wall. Davenport, who then moved up to the front row due to Pursley's misfortune, took the lead on the second restart and held the point until lap 25 when he broke a transmission. Madden inherited the race lead and held off Dennis Franklin in the waning laps to win by 0.267 seconds. Only eight cars finished the attrition-filled race, seven of which were on the lead lap.

The win for Madden was his series-leading 15th career Southern Nationals Series victory. Tommy Kerr scratched for the evening after hot laps.

Following a day off on Wednesday, the Schaeffer Oil Southern Nationals Series will resume competition with a $5,300 to win showdown on Thursday, July 14 at the North Georgia Speedway in Chatsworth, Georgia.
