"Cabin Fever 40": Johnson Sweeps SLMs, Crates at Boyd's

RINGGOLD, Ga. - Jan. 29. Winter took a weekend off and gave way to mild weather as Boyd's Speedway hosted its season opening "Cabin Fever 40" Saturday. Ronnie Johnson, of Chattanooga, picked up $3,000 for a 40-lap romp, making it a sweep on the day with the accompanying Crate Late Model victory earlier in the afternoon.

Half of the 32 entries were locked in through their qualifying times, putting Johnson and Ray Cook on the front row. Johnson leapt out front and hugged the rail for all 40 rounds while Cook tested Johnson on restarts in the next groove up. Cook could stay with Johnson's #5 for a few laps after each restart, but while the track remained racey, Cook was still unable to get the bite on the slippery surface to seal the deal. Cook settled for second while Riley Hickman raced in third throughout. Yeammates Lamar Scoggins and Rick Hixson completed the top five.

Johnson raced from the rear of the field to fifth in his Crate Late Model heat race, then had the good fortune of being awarded third when two of the top four heat finishers were disqualified for illegal tires. After a lap four restart in the main event, Johnson overtook early leader Curtis Cline and led the remainder to earn his first win of the day. Cline slipped to fourth, giving way to runner up Jeff Smith, and Jerry Coffman.
