July 31: Fairbury American Legion Speedway hosted twin Late Model features Saturday, the first a makeup race for a June 5th rainout.

In that race, polesitter Daren Friedman pulled away from the field early in the race, taking a half straight-away lead over Eric Smith, Aaron Ricketts, Jimmy Dehm, and Donny Walden. Walden was the lone driver to run on the bottom of the track and soon found himself racing Smith for the second position.

On the 12th lap, race leader Friedman suddenly slowed on the track, ending his night as Smith became the new leader. Smith and Walden battled side by side for five laps before Smith was able to pull out to a slight lead. Derek Chandler found himself in third, waiting for one of the leaders to make a mistake.

The last 10 laps of the race, it was anyone’s guess who would take home the honors. Chandler got high in the cushion, allowing several cars to get by. A blanket could have been thrown over the cars of Smith, Walden, Ricketts, Scott Bull, and Joe Harlan in the last five laps with the fans on their feet. As the drivers took the white flag with Smith and Walden running on the bottom, Ricketts got as high as possible in turns 1-2 and got the traction needed to take the lead and hold on for his first career UMP Late Model win at his home town track. Point leader Smith took second, with Walden turning in one of his best runs recently at Fairbury in third, followed by Bull and Harlan.

In the second, regularly scheduled feature, Scott Bull ran the top side of the track, holding the lead over Jason Feger until Eric Smith moved into second by lap six. Ryan Unzicker was able to get by Feger, then Smith for second. On the 14th lap, Unzicker had the momentum to take the top spot from Bull, with Smith following.

On lap 17, as Unzicker was entering turn one, Smith got into the back of him, and the cars of Feger, Joe Harlan, and Donny Walden had nowhere to go and were collected in the wreck. Walden’s stellar night came to an end, with the rest able to continue.

Following the caution, with Unzicker on the bottom, Feger moved into the lead on lap 23 and was able to pull away in the end of a wild night of racing. Unzicker, Harlan, and Darren Friedman followed, while Smith came back to take fifth. ~ Rocky Ragusa
