ULMS: Blair Tops ULMS
By Glenn Slocum
BUSTI, N.Y. - Aug. 7. Robbie Blair prevailed as the United Late Model Series (ULMS) made its second appearance
this year at Stateline Speedway in a 50 lap Memorial for Lynn Seamens and Darlene Roberts. The Titusville, Pa.
standout earned $7,000 for his day's work in a Mike Knight backup car after a multi-lap duel with Dave Hess
With Blair starting in row three, Chad Valone won the redraw and started on the pole inside of David Scott, with
Dick Barton and Hess in row two in the 31-car starting field. Scott led lap one, while lap two saw Valone give
way to Hess. Blair moved by Valone for third on the next lap and the top three cars began to move away from
Scott was up on top with Hess trying to make the low side pass and Blair waiting for an opening. The leaders
entered lap traffic nine laps into the event and Hess finally led lap 12, before the first yellow flew for
Dennis Lunger's stopped race car.
Blair took second from Scott on the restart and John Volpe was all over Scott for third. Volpe lost a little
ground and Barton quickly took advantage. Blair lead on lap 22, but Hess fought back to lead the next lap in heavy
traffic. The next caution flew as Chad Valone stopped at the pit entrance, nearly collecting Chad Ruhlman with
25 laps completed.
After the restart, John Lobb and Scott Johnson tangled, sending both cars spinning into the infield in the
middle of the front stretch. Lobb pulled into the pits and Johnson required a wrecker to leave the speedway. Back
under way, Blair led lap 29 as Hess began to fade into a battle for second with Barton.
With two more cautions slowing the action late in the race, Blair controlled the restarts and was in cruise
control with a clear speedway and two laps to go. Blair took the checkers and Mike Knight nearly nipped Hess for
second before calling short.
