UFO Race Championship: Hawkins Betters Brother in "Topless 51" Opener at Tyler Co.

MIDDLEBOURNE, W.V. - April 9. Opening night at Tyler County Speedway saw the UFo series land for the 17th annual "Topless 51" for Late Models, and Jared Hawkins landed in Victory Lane with a $5,000 check after starting 13th and beating brother Jacob Hawkins to the finish line.

Tim Dohm jumped to the front on the start, followed by Andy Bond, Harold Redman, Jr., Zack Dohm and Jared Miley in the top five. As the first yellow came out on lap four as Matt Lux looped his mount, though, the double file restart saw Redman up to second, followed by Jared Hawkins (from 13th), Paul Wilmoth Jr., and Zach Dohm in the top five.

After another caution for a Clate Copeman spin, the race stayed green until lap 12 when Mike Benedum came around in turn four. Dohm, Redman, and Hawkins retained the top three, but Paul Wilmoth and Steve Wilmoth had moved to fourth and fifth.

On lap 24, Hawkins got by Redman for second and began to apply pressure to Dohm. On lap 26 the front two were door to door, but the yellow again was unfurled on lap 27 when Lux slowed in turn four, and yet again on lap 32 as Miley slowed on the front chute.

Hawkins was turning up the heat as he pulled even with Dohm on lap 40. After another caution on lap 42, Dohm fended off Hawkins lap after lap until lap 48, when exiting turn two, Dohm slowed, letting Hawkins shoot by. Hawkins now was the new leader ahead of Wilmoth, Robbie Scott, Jacob Hawkins (from 17th) and Mike Benedum (from 21st).

Jacob Hawkins then motored his way to his brothers tail as the final yellow came out on lap 49. The two Fairmont drivers started the three lap dash side by side, but elder Hawkins was able to held off younger brother for the win. Scott crossed the line in third, Wilmoth was fourth, and Benedum was fifth.

NALMS Suspends Remaining Season

In a statement released to the racing media Monday, Northern All All Stars Late Model Series (NALMS) owners Shawn Hall and Bob Mooney relased the following statement:

To all NALMS drivers and fans,

Northern Allstars Late Model Series regrets to inform all of our drivers and fans that as of today (May 14, 2012) we will suspend all series races for the remaining 2012 season. The primary reason for the decision to discontinue the series was mainly economics. Tracks, teams and fans are having a hard time these days with the cost of living in general. With the cost of fuel, parts, tires, tickets and lodging, many people just cannot afford to travel to our shows, so we feel it's best to stop for now and try to regroup for the 2013 season.

Our series needs to be able to have at least 18 to 20 shows to cover our cost of putting on these shows and our drivers point funds. With many tracks cutting back on their special events and other tracks just choosing not to have specials at all, it's has really cut our options for race tracks down to a very few unless you are willing to travel several hours away from the Central Illinois area, and that is not cost effective for the racing teams or fans.

In closing we would like to thank all of the drivers and fans whom have supported the series over the years and we hope to be able to come back with a bigger and better season for everyone in 2013.
