PRO Dirtcar Series: Burroughs Scores First Win of 2011 in PRO Season Opener

TUSCUMBIA, Ala. – April 29. After what has been the toughest start to a season in his career, Anthony Burroughs from Rogersville, Alabama found his way into victory lane for the first time as he battled past Rick Rickman late in the race to claim the $2,000 win at North Alabama Speedway in the season opener for the PRO Dirt Car Series.

Rick Rickman - Josh Putnam - North Alabama Motor Speedway PRO

Josh Putnam and #86 Rick Rickman both led the PRO event at North Alabama on Friday, but Putnam spun from the lead and Rickman gave his up to Anthony Burroughs late in the race and took second. (Connie Putnam)

After being the only driver in the 12 second bracket in qualifying, Rick Rickman earned the Southern Belle pole position for the 40 lap feature with Josh Putnam starting alongside him. After seeing the first three attempts to get the race underway nullified by cautions for various incidents, the race finally went green with Putnam leading Rickman, Burroughs, Kyle Beard, and Ronny Lee Hollingsworth.

Putnam paced the field for the first seven circuits until bad luck struck for the leader, when he jumped the cushion and spun out of turn two to bring out the caution. He would rejoin the field, but on the tail with Rick Rickman inheriting the lead.

Brian Rickman - Daniel Miller - PRO Series at North Alabama

As the race went back green, Rickman led the way with Burroughs and Beard in pursuit. One lap later, Hollingsworth raced past Beard for third and looked to be on his way to the front, until he too jumped the cushion in turn two to bring out the caution. Hollingsworth called it a night.

The race then underwent a long green flag run, and it appeared that Rickman was on his way to the opening night win, but Burroughs had other ideas. As Rickman worked the cushion, Burroughs worked the low side and with six laps to go, he claimed the lead exiting turn four. Burroughs went on to motor away from the field as claimed the win over Rickman, Brian Rickman, Beard, and Putnam, who rebounded from his early race issues.

In an emotional victory lane interview, Burroughs commented, “It’s been an incredibly tough time for us this year, and then this past week has been so tough for so many people in this area with the devastation from the tornadoes. This win is dedicated to everyone, who has experienced losses this week.”

Ronny Lee Hollingsworth won the RacingJunk.com First Qualifier, while Daniel Miller won the MSRMafia.com Second Qualifier.

Jason Milam received the GRT Race Cars Hard Luck Award after making hard contact with the front stretch wall in the feature.

NALMS Suspends Remaining Season

In a statement released to the racing media Monday, Northern All All Stars Late Model Series (NALMS) owners Shawn Hall and Bob Mooney relased the following statement:

To all NALMS drivers and fans,

Northern Allstars Late Model Series regrets to inform all of our drivers and fans that as of today (May 14, 2012) we will suspend all series races for the remaining 2012 season. The primary reason for the decision to discontinue the series was mainly economics. Tracks, teams and fans are having a hard time these days with the cost of living in general. With the cost of fuel, parts, tires, tickets and lodging, many people just cannot afford to travel to our shows, so we feel it's best to stop for now and try to regroup for the 2013 season.

Our series needs to be able to have at least 18 to 20 shows to cover our cost of putting on these shows and our drivers point funds. With many tracks cutting back on their special events and other tracks just choosing not to have specials at all, it's has really cut our options for race tracks down to a very few unless you are willing to travel several hours away from the Central Illinois area, and that is not cost effective for the racing teams or fans.

In closing we would like to thank all of the drivers and fans whom have supported the series over the years and we hope to be able to come back with a bigger and better season for everyone in 2013.
