Mississippi State Championship Challenge (MSCC) Series
Lucas Rises to the Occasion For First "Frostbite 50" Win
in MSCC Opener
PASS CHRISTIAN, Miss. - March 6. The Mississippi State Championship Challenge (MSCC) Series opened its 2010
season at South Mississippi Speedway with the seventh annual “Frost Bite 50”. As temperatures were
dropping down to the “frost” range, Shep Lucas of McKenzie, Alabama stuck Jay Dickens powered Trak-Star chassis
on the low side of the track and drove to the victory in the $5,000 paying event.
After giving up the first lap to outside front row starter David Breazeale, Lucas regained the top spot to lead
the remainder and score the third win of his career with the Meridian, Mississippi based series. A later
altercation with Breazeale saw Lucas's lead restored, but sent Breazeale to the rear of the lead lap, where he
finished in ninth.
With 26 drivers from six states taking time, Lucas got credit for the evening's fast time after Florida
teenager Joseph Joiner saw his qualifying lap disallowed when he came in underweight at the scales. Lucas
parlayed his fast time into a dash win to earn a starting spot on the pole. Taking the lead on the second lap,
Lucas led the rest of the way. David Ashley of Zachary, La. came from his fifth place starting position to
finish second, some 2.5 seconds behind Lucas, while Wendell Wallace of Batesville, Ark. started 11th on
the grid and advanced eight positions quickly to finish third in a mishandling race car.
Second generation driver Alex Ashley of Zachary, La. took home the hard charger award. Ashley had to
make the field by way of a provisional start, then suffered another setback with a mid-race tangle with Scott
Creel, only to advance from the rear of the field to claim fourth at the finish, having advanced 17 positions.
Shannon Lee of Lumberton, Miss. rounded out the top five after advancing 10 positions. Nine cars finished
on the lead lap.
Last year's winner, Chad Thrash, made an early exit and had to settle for a 20th place finish.
