Van Wormer Checks Out at Eldora ALMS Run

Eldora Speedway

ROSSBURG, Ohio - April 17. Amid bone-chilling temperatures, Jeep VanWormer captured Saturday's main event to kick off the 2010 Sunoco American Late Model Series season at Eldora Speedway.

For VanWormer, the 25 lap distance was more than enough. Only one lap slowed the pace, with that falling on lap two in a multi-car collision involving Tim Sabo, Scott Orr and Phil Ausra. On the ensuing restart, leader VanWormer had something poke a hole in his radiator and for the next 23 laps, he kept one eye on the gauges and one eye on the track.

With the temperatures rising, he decided to ride it out and go for broke. The Pinconning, Michigan native had developed a nice lead over the remainder of the pack, as Wayne Chinn, Matt Miller and Steve Casebolt fought it out for runner-up honors. Chinn held Miller at bay through lap 12, but with the race going non-stop, he simply ran out of time to catch the high-flying VanWormer.

VanWormer admitted to slowing down in the latter stages of the event in an effort to preserve the power plant; unaware that Miller was gaining momentum. Following the duo to the finish line were Rusty Schlenk, who nipped Casebolt at the finish, and Chinn.
